Apple CEO, Tim Cook Appoints John Ternus as Successor
The change in personnel signifies a new chapter of expansion and innovation for the tech giants
Looking back to when Cook took over the reins from visionary “father of Apple” Steve Jobs, there were doubters aplenty. However, through his calm and understated business philosophy and detailed supply chain strategy, Apple dominated global smartphone markets and pushed their market capitalization to a record trillion dollar valuation. Cementing Apple as cultural icons at the pinnacle of tech under Cook.
In Apple’s press release Cook said “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company. I love Apple with all of my being, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of such ingenious, innovative, creative and deeply caring people who have been unwavering in their dedication to enriching the lives of our customers and creating the best products and services in the world,” Cook describes incoming CEO John Ternus as someone who possesses “the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor.”

John Ternus, Apple’s current senior vice president of Hardware Engineering will succeed Cook as CEO. Having served Apple for over 25 years under, working under Steve Jobs with Tim Cook as mentor. Ternus’s appointment is widely regarded as Apple returning to its “technology-centric fundamentals”
John Ternus stated, “I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity to carry Apple’s mission forward,” having spent almost his entire career at Apple “working toward something bigger than ourselves”, Ternus promised “to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century.”
Born in 1975, John Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ternus served as vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013 before joining the executive team in 2021 as senior vice president. Apple cites Ternus’s engineering work as instrumental in the introduction of multiple iterations of Apple’s iPad, AirPods, iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch.
Apple believes Ternus “led much of the company’s focus in areas like reliability and durability”, introducing techniques responsible for the remarkable resilience of Apple products. He has also reduced the carbon footprint across multiple product lines through innovation in materials and design.
Amid the rise in AI, tech industry figureheads believe that Ternus’s primary challenge after taking over will be how to further integrate Apple Intelligence into their ecosystem. In addition, Apple’s new CEO should continue to develop the comprehensive AI suite. Lastly, the development of the Vision Pro series of products will undoubtedly be a priority as well.
