Scott McTominay’s Iconic Overhead Kick Immortalised on Scottish Banknote

From Manchester United outcast to Italian Serie A champion, a comeback story for the ages

In the footballing world, tales of out-of-favour players being sold only to find their form in a different league are a dime a dozen. But Scott McTominay’s comeback is the stuff of legend. For professional athletes, exceptional technical ability only gets a foot in the door; success in this line of work also requires an insane amount of luck. More specifically, the “main character” kind of energy that only found in fictional works or your save file on FC26.

Painted as one of few (alleged) scapegoats surrounding Manchester United’s fall from success, the 29 year-old Scottish midfielder was cast out from the hallowed English Premier League to the Italian Serie A. However, it was within the ranks of Italian first division side Napoli that Mactominay chose to stage his career rebuild, one so epic that the Bank of Scotland took notice.

His tenure as a Red Devil was a turbulent. Lauded by fans for his industry and willingness to work press, the youth academy product also made a name for himself for his mastery of the dark arts of football — never afraid to get stuck in. Having called Old Trafford his home since boyhood, he called time on his Manchester United career in 2024 — after 22 years of loyalty to the red half of Manchester.

A key figure during the club’s phase of rebuild, the midfielder sported a simple, no-nonsense buzzcut as he hounded opponents for possession. With each lacklustre result, social media was quick to brand him as the team’s mediocre “blue-collar worker”. Ironically, it was the Scotsman who bailed out whoever filled the manager’s seat at Old Trafford whenever fans called for a change in personnel—delivering clutch moments for The Red Devils.

From seasons under “The Special One”—José Mourinho, old boy Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Erik ten Hag, McTominay played saviour on numerous occasions. Despite an unforgettable stoppage-time double against Brentford in 2023—a season where he reached double figures in goals scored—Scott McTominay still found himself on the transfer list, his heroics overlooked.

That very summer, United sold the midfielder to Italian powerhouse side Napoli for a cut fee of £25.7 million. Being an academy player, the move was pure profit for the Reds who were in the midst of a rebuild. The football community saw his departure from the English giants as the start of every footballer’s inevitable decline, an outsider destined to struggle to adapt in a different setting. But fate ruled differently, as the transfer would ultimately reignite his talents.

Arriving in Italy’s passionate southern province, Scott McTominay gained footballing freedom. Under the tutelage of renowned tactician Antonio Conte, the Scot enjoyed the opportunity to express himself on the pitch. A player reborn, McTominay traded his defensive tendencies for aggressive, goal-scoring prowess. Employed in the heart of the midfield, Scott McTominay was finally unleashed.

In his first season with Napoli, McTominay found the net 13 times in all competitions, leading the Italian side to their fourth Serie A title and bagged himself the Serie A Player of the Year award in the process. Becoming the first Scotsman to earn the prestigious honour previously held by legends of the sport like Zidane, Pirlo, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Ronaldo, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

What fans found most fascinating about Scott’s renaissance, was the effect the fashionable land of Italy seemed to have on “genetically transformed” him. Online forums joked that his departure from England’s top flight had “unlocked Italian aesthetics”, the somewhat rustic, even slightly naive, crew-cut sporting Red now transformed into a dashing centre-parted Seria A MVP. No longer a no-nonsense workhorse in United red, McTominay had grown into a “Scottish Prince” hailing from the Italian peninsula.

Shattering Scotland’s 28-year World Cup curse with a stunner

McTominay’s momentum carried over from his club to the international stage, helping Scotland’s national team qualify for the World Cup back in November. In a crucial must-win fixture against Denmark, Scott stepped up and produced a stunning overhead kick that rallied the nation to a 4-2 victory. A result that guaranteed Scotland’s qualification to football’s biggest stage after an almost 30-year absence.

In recognition for his heroics, the Bank of Scotland released a hundred limited-edition £20 banknotes bearing his triumph against gravity. His now iconic shot featured alongside several other Scottish landmarks, fifty of these notes are to be distributed through auctions, raffles, and pop-ups across Scotland with the proceeds benefitting Crisis Scotland — a charity that aids the vulnerable and homeless in Scotland. A reminder of the social and cultural impact the sport has on the world, McTominay’s overhead kick now rightfully remembered as a historic moment in time.

“Being able to play in the world’s biggest football competition is every player’s dream and the hope of every fan. Seeing your goal printed on banknotes feels very special.”

Wearing the armband for Scotland, he leads his country to battle against global heavyweights

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, McTominay and his countrymen are enjoying their well-deserved moment in the spotlight. Scotland officially kicks off their World Cup campaign against Haiti in Boston, followed by fixtures against Morocco and five-time World Champions Brazil.

While it is impossible to predict how far Scotland will progress in the tournament, McTominay’s journey from Mancunian martyr to bonafide Naples football great will live long in the memories of football fans worldwide. From the rock bottom of the Premier League to the highest peak in Italian football, the Scotland skipper has inspired a nation with his never-say-die spirit and endeavour.

Returning to the World Cup after nearly 30 years of disappointment and heartbreak, Scotland is banking on McTominay to deliver once again.
