If you’ve dressed up, your wrist shouldn’t be letting you down. The best watches to wear with a suit will take your tailoring up a notch – as long as you get a few basic principles right. “Similar to a suit, fit is pretty key,” says Bailey Moon, a stylist for both actors (Morgan Spector, Zachary Quinto) and politicians (Joe Biden, Zohran Mamdani). Your watch strap should be neither too tight nor too lose – the common mistake, especially with metal straps, is to have it loose enough for your watch to fall below your wrist onto your hand, which “creates a weird effect”. Ideally, he says, you’d tailor your suit and shirts with your watch in mind.
Both Moon and Fabio Immediato, a stylist for the likes of James McAvoy and Joseph Quinn, agree that a thinner, smaller-faced watch is what you want, so it doesn’t bulge your shirt cuffs and jar with your suit’s cut. “Anything too chunky I find very tacky,” says Immediato. But silhouette factors in: you’ve got a little more leeway with a baggy suit than a slimmer one.
Where is there no correct answer? Metal bracelet versus leather strap. Moon favours metal, and Immediato leather. But what they both agree on is that the suit should come first, and the watch second. It’s an accessory; it should whisper, not scream. “Watches are still statement pieces, but they can overwhelm the wearer,” says Moon. “The watch should complement the fit, but it shouldn’t be the main focus.”
