2026 FIFA World Cup: It’s All About to Kick Off
After a four-year wait the FIFA World Cup is back, and bigger than ever
With the Winter Olympics out of the way, the world’s attention now turns to international football’s biggest stage: the FIFA World Cup. And this time FIFA is doing things -gulp- bigly.
An upsized format
Instead of the usual 32-team format, this year’s competition sees 48 of the best footballing nations take to stadiums across USA, Canada, and Mexico for their shot at eternal glory. So if you intend to catch all games this time round (all 104 of them to be precise) you might just have to clear your schedule from June 11th to July 19th entirely.
This is the first time three countries will play host to the global tournament, with the final fixture to be played at the 82,500-seater MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. And that’s not all, this year’s final will include a “Super Bowl-style” halftime segment with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin appointed lead creative on the momentous project.
With global superstars like Katy Perry, Lisa (Blackpink), J Balvin, Future, and Tyla lifting the curtain in June at the opening fixtures. Shakira, Madonna, and seven-member Korean boy band BTS will perform at the very first FIFA World Cup Final halftime show.
New rules & debutants
Increased slot allocation saw four nations book their spot in the competition – Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan – for the first time. FIFA has also confirmed several new rules to be enforced this time round, with emphasis on time-wasting and discipline.
Players covering their mouths to have words – usually of the heated variety – with one another could now see themselves sent off for their censorship – yes, we’re just as amused as you are.
In fact, if players plan to stage a protest via walkout, their premature exodus from the area of play might be a permanent one – now that its a red-card offence. Coaches who incite similar actions could also trigger an immediate 3-0 forfeiture, so level heads are required both on and off the pitch.
New Dark Horses & Group of Death
Let’s face it, no one loves an upset more than bookies and football romantics who love a good underdog story. So here’s five teams capable of snatching the headlines of next day’s paper:
Japan
Instant-classic Adidas kits? Check. Star-studded roster of talent? Check. 2026 sees the Samurai Blue represent the region for the seventh time as they prepare to do battle against the mighty Dutch, Swedish, and Tunisian teams in Group F.
Columbia
The first of two rising South American powerhouses on our list, Columbia features an extensive pool of talented attacking-minded players. Skippered by seasoned worldie merchant James Rodriguez, the Columbian side could prove a formidable opponent with the blistering pace of FC Bayern Munich winger Luiz Diaz available.
Norway
Any team with the Premier League’s leading goalscorer upfront would prove a threat (just ask any Arsenal fan).
It just so happens this team in particular is also captained by a midfield maestro capable of creating some scintillating chances whenever involved (just ask any Arsenal fan). Whether they clinch the ultimate prize at the end remains to be seen, but Norway already have our vote for best-looking kits.
Ecuador
The second South American driving force on the list, Ecuador features an exciting mix of experience and youth. With a midfield anchored by Chelsea’s 115-million pound dynamo Moises Caicedo, Ecuador could prove tough opponents in group E.
Senegal
Referred to as Les Lions De La Teranga (The Lions of Teranga) in their native tongue, Senegal’s recent Africa Cup of Nations showing has been marred by controversy. But with a lineup of regular starters for established European sides, don’t count these Lions out just yet. Let’s just hope they read the updated rulebook this time.
USA
Never discount a home field advantage. Coupled with a league-proven manager calling the shots, and a pool of talent the likes of American football has never seen. The USMT might show the entire world that it may actually be called soccer – a frightening prospect. In fact, American broadcasters Fox Sports have backed the hosts all the way to the final in their latest campaign.
The ‘I’s have it
The group stage is arguably the most unforgiving portion of the tournament. Four teams – drawn at random – play each other just once, with only the top two nations earning safe passage to the next phase. On occasion, the footballing gods turn a blind eye and place evenly-matched (on paper) nations together in the same group.
The result? An infamous ‘Group of Death’ that hopefuls are desperate to avoid at any cost. Every game becomes a must-win and even a draw can feel like a loss. But for neutrals, these fixtures provide excellent entertainment.
Four-time champions France look to have their work cut out as they prepare to lock horns with dark horses Senegal and Norway with Iraq also vying for knockout stage qualification. While the new format allows for 8 of the best third place teams in the group stage to make it through, Group I’s eventual survivors is anyone’s guess.
